CIF Finals:  HBHS 0  Newport 2
The Oilers lost a heartbreaker in the finals against rival Newport.  A very motivated and aggresive Newport jumped to a 2 goal lead in the first half.  The Oilers re-grouped for the second half and kept the ball in the attacking half.  They earned 8 second half corners but were unable to convert any of them.

CIF Playoffs Semi-Final: HBHS 2  Harvard Westlake 0
HBHS surged into the LAFHA, aka CIF, Championship Finals for the fifth consecutive year.  They controlled the visiting Wolverines with tenacious defense and a powerful counter attack.  The defensive backline of Marina Elmore, Faith Hicks, Kayal Winsatt and sweeper Niccole Anzivino had several critical stops and limited Harvard Westlake's trips into the circle.  On the one occassion that the Wolverines did get through, keeper Brittney Cristini made a criical save on a shot drilled from 5 yards. 

The Oilers pushed the play up the sidelines through outside halfbacks Letty Guerrero, Kirsti Stangeland, and Allie Knobbe allowing center backs Abbey Masters and Lindsey Walter space for touch passes on the counter.  The Oilers first goal came on a counter with forward Kayla Wigney finishing a reverse stick from 6 yards out.  Their second goal started when Walter rushed and stole a Harvard short corner attempt and quickly ended when forward Hannah Rodriguez found Stangeland on the far post for the insurance goal.

The Oilers meet rival Newport Harbor in the CIF Finals for the fifth consective year.  The game will be played at a neutral site, the Edison Turf Field.  Game time is 3:00 pm, November 3.

CIF Playoffs Round 1: HBHS 8  Bonita 0
The Oilers dominated visting Bonita to open the CIF Playoffs. Letty Guerrero, Kayla Wigney, Hannah Rodriguez, Kirsti Stangland, Tori Wickham, and Abby Masters all scored.  The HBHS defense lead by Marina Elmore and Kayla Winsatt keep Bonita bottled up all game.  Lindsey Walter assisted on four of the goals.  Come out and watch as they compete in CIF 2nd round play on Wednesday against Harvard Westlake on Nov.2 at 6:00pm in our Stadium!

HBHS 5  Fountain Valley 0
HBHS shut out Fountain Valley at Cap Shue Stadium to complete league undefeated and capture the Sunset League crown for the 5th consective year.

HBHS 3  Westminster 2
The Oilers survived at very tough match at Westminster, prevailing 3 -2 for the win.  Kayla Wigney opened the scoring early with a goal on a break-away in the first 2 minutes of the match but the Westminster defense stiffened to shut out the Oilers for the rest of the first half.  The Lions tied the score at 1 -1 just before halftime.  Lindsey Walter converted on a penalty stroke and Hannah Rodriguez scored off the near post to give the Oilers a 3-1 lead in the second half.  The Lions, however, were persistent and successful at hitting the long ball which finally lead to their second score of the game.  The HBHS defense picked and was able to shut down the Lions and secure the win.

HBHS 3  Edison 0
Letty Guerreo slammed in beautiful reverse stick in front of the cage to give the Oilers a two goal lead late in the first half.  Kayla Wigney scored the first and last goals for HBHS as they defeated the host Chargers 3 - 0.

HBHS 2  Newport Harbor 0
Kayla Wigney scored two highlight goals to lead the Oilers over the Sailors at Cap Shue Stadium. In an intense and fast paced match between the two Sunset League powerhouses, Newport appeared to control the first half and Huntington did control the second.  After the first half, which ended in a scoreless tie, the Oilers came out with renewed energy and began to force the play with a quick passing game to the delight of the large and loud HBHS crowd.

Wigney got her first goal after a spectacular run down the middle, beating three defenders and scoring with a reverse stick from 10 yards out.  Lindsey Walter set up the insurance goal by weaving through the midfield and giving Wigney a perfect pass down the right side.  Wigney collected the ball and dashed across the face of the cage hitting a solid reverse stick for the goal.  The Oiler defense lead by Kayla Winsatt and Marina Elmore chalked up their fourth consecutive Sunset League shutout.

JV standout and speedster Amanda Mattes was bumped up to varsity for the game and played very well as a reserve forward.

HBHS 1 Marina 0
The Oilers found themselves in a defensive struggle on Marina's home field. Much of the match was played with the Oilers on the attack but the Viking's defense and their keeper denied multiple short corners and all but one shot.  Hannah Rodriguez scored the only and winning goal by using her quickness to beat the Marina keeper from two yards out.

HBHS 6 Fountain Valley 0
HBHS remained undefeated in Sunset League play with a 6-0 win over host Fountain Valley.  Kayla Wigney scored two goals including the first goal in the game with beautiful reverse stick shot into the upper corner of the box.  Nicole Minnicucci slapped in a goal on the corner and Kirsti Stangeland scored on nice tap in off a Marina Elmore assist.  Lindsey Walter and Abby Masters each scored a goal to round out the scoring.

OC Tournament
The Oilers won their first two games against Bonita and Glendora to advance to the finals where for the 5th year in a row they faced Newport Harbor.  The final ended in a 0-0 tie and Newport prevailed 3-2 on strokes.

HBHS 7  Westminster 0
HBHS started our fast with two early goals as they cruised to a 7 - 0 victory over the visiting Lions.  Abby Masters and Lindsey Walter both scored two goals and Kristi Stangeland, Hannah Rodriguez, and Kayla Wigney each added a goal.  Wigney was also credited with three assists.

HBHS 3  Edison 1
The Oilers got two goals from Kayla Wigney, the first after Wigney had beaten two Chargers off the dribble to penetrate the circle for the shot and the second on an assist from Abby Masters.  Hanah Rodriguez tipped in a hard shot from Lindsey Walter for the Oilers third goal.  Edison scored a goal late in the first half which is only the second goal HBHS has allowed all season.

HBHS 2  Newport Harbor 0
Huntington Beach improved their Sunset League record to 2 - 0 and their overall recored to 15 - 0 with a victory at Newport Harbor.  The Oilers downed the Sailors 2 - 0 with both goals coming after short corners earned by Lindsey Walter.  Hannah Rodriguez fired a shot to the post that was finished by Abby Masters for the first goal and Kayla Wigney finshed a short corner attack to secure the win.  Game footage is available HERE.

HBHS 3  Marina 0
Huntington Beach opened up Sunset League play with a 3 - 0 victory over Marina at Cap Shue Stadium.  The Oilers got two goals from Kayla Wigney and one goal from Marina Elmore.

HBHS 5  Bonita 0
The Oilers pushed their pre-season record to 13-0 with a convincing win over visiting Bonita.  HBHS jumped to an early lead with a nice cross from Lindsey Walter to Kayla Wigney who had timed her run into the circle perfectly for the score.  Several minutes later Wigney returned the assist as she found Walter near the top of the circle for the Oilers second goal.  Tori Wickham was the leading scorer with two goals - a nifty goal on the post and a driving shot.  Marina Elmore rounded out the scoring with a beautiful driving shot in the second half.

HBHS 3  Harvard Westlake 1
The undefeated Harvard-Westlake Wolverines jumped to an early lead with a goal in the first half.  The visiting Oilers quickly responded with two goals to take a 2-1 lead at the half.  The lead was pushed to 3-1 near the midpoint of the second half.  Kayla Wigney scored 2 goals and Hannah Rodriguez scored 1.

Oilers Capture Sunset League Title, HBHS 3  Fountain Valley 1
The JV Oilers captured the Sunset League title as they defeated Fountain Valley 3-1 to complete league play undefeated.  The only goal HBHS allowed during league play was scored by Fountain Valley in the game.  Sabrina DeSisto opened the scoring with 2 goals in the first half, both coming on beautiful assists from Mac.  Nica Taglieri scored an unassited goal in the second half to round out the Oilers scoring.

HBHS 7  Westminster 0
The JV Oilers dominated the Lions 7 - 0.  Goals were scored by Kaitlin Cruze, Sabrina DeSisto, Olivia Mello, Mac, and Samantha Earthman.  As it was throughly a team effort there is some dispute among the players as to who got which goal and which assist.

The JV Oilers defeated Edison 1 -0 extending their lead in the Sunset League.

HBHS 1  Newport Harbor 0
The JV Oilers took control of the Sunset League with 1 - 0 victory over the Sailors at Cap Shue Stadium.  Just like the first meeting between these two teams, which ended in a scoreless tie, this was another defensive match.  Nica Taglieri flicked in a penalty stroke in the second half for the games only goal. Oiler keeper Katelyn Mauger made several amazing saves, especially late in the game as Newport was pressing, to preserve the shut out.

HBHS Freshman 3  Newport Harbor Frosh/Soph 0
Coach Masters withheld all of her sophomore players from the match against the Sailors' Frosh/Soph team.  And the Oiler freshmen gave every indication that they were more than capable of continuing the Huntington tradition of field hockey excellence.  The Oilers controlled the game in route to 3 - 0 victory.  The initial goal came after two pretty passes, first from Samantha Earthman to Julianna Nagle and then from Nagle to Mac for the score.  Nagle notched her second assist when she found Earthman open for the second goal.  Noel Ball finished the Oilers scoring on a goal following an assist from Mac.

HBHS 1  Marina 0
Similar to the varsity game the HBHS JV team found themselves in a defensive contest against the Marina JV team.  Emily Matinez scored the game winner following a fantastic team effort to push the ball up the field and into the circle.

HBHS 2  Fountain Valley 0
The Oiler JV continued their strong league play with another shutout.  The defeated the host Fountain Valley Barons 2-0.  Nica Taglieri, in her first game back since spraining her ankle, sparked the offense with an unassisted goal and Mac scored off an assist from Samantha Earthman.

HBHS 4  Westminster 0
The HBHS JV defense posted their fourth consective league shutout as they beat Westminster 4 - 0 at Cap Shue Stadium.  Emily Martinez sent a sweet pass to Sabrina DeSisto to open the Oilers scoring.  DeSisto continued her scoring streak with her second goal in the game and Samantha Earthman and Julianna Nagle each scored a goal.

HBHS 1  Edison 0
The Oiler defense finished their third league game in a row without giving up a goal. Edison pressured HBHS repeatedly but the Oilers repealed each attack.  Sabrina DeSisto slapped in a short cross from Mac for the winning goal.

HBHS 0  Newport Harbor 0
HBHS remained undefeated in Sunset League play with a scoreless tie against host Newport Harbor.  The JV Oilers made a furious push at the end of the game and nearly got a goal with 20 seconds remaining but the Sailors defense held out to preserve the tie.

HBHS 2  Marina 0
The JV Oilers continued to show their improving game as they beat visiting Marina 2 - 0 in their Sunset League Opener. Sabrina DeSisto fed a crisp pass to Samantha Earthman for one goal and Kaitlin Cruze scored an unassisted goal.

HBHS 2  Bonita 0
Under the lights of Cap Shue Stadium the JV Oilers shut-out Bonita while scoring 2 goals.  Much of the game was played on Bonita's side of the field but Bonita did mount several aggressive counter attacks.  Keeper Katelyn Mauger made two nice saves and Nica Taglieri and Amanda Mattes each got a goal.

HBHS 0  Harvard Westlake 1
The JV Oilers came out one goal short in a defensive struggle with Harvard-Westlake Wolverine.  The Wolverines scored the only goal of the game on a short corner late in the first half.  The Oilers pressed hard in the second half and created several scoring chances but were unable to notch a goal.

HBHS 1  Chaminade 1
The evenly contested pre-season match with Chaminade was reflected in the 1 -1 tie.  The Oilers Amanda Mattes scored off an assist from Nica Taglieri.

LAFHA Field Day at Westminster High School - HBHS Goes Undeafted
Behind 3 goals from Mac, 2 from Sabrina Desisto, and one from Amanda Mattes the JV Oilers went undefeated in four 30 minute games.  The Oilers beat Newport Harbor 1-0, Harvard-Westlake 1-0, and Bonita 3-0 and tied Westminster 1 -1.

HBHS 0  Glendora 1
Glendora bested the visiting Oilers by a goal.  The JV squad played hard but even the pleasant park-like setting and the stirring music from the Glendora Marching Band were not enough to offset the disappointing loss.
